Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid)

Water-soluble antioxidant vitamin; UL is 2,000 mg/day.

By Suplagen Team · Updated

What it is

Vitamin C is required for collagen synthesis and antioxidant function. High doses mainly add GI risk for most adults.

How it works

Cofactor in collagen formation; antioxidant activity in aqueous compartments.

What the evidence says

Essential nutrient; supplementation above adequacy is rarely necessary and mainly increases GI burden.

How much to take

The catalog range is 250 to 1,000 mg daily, with a 2,000 mg ceiling, and the honest note comes first: above adequacy, extra vitamin C rarely does much except upset your stomach. If your diet has fruit and vegetables in it, you're likely covered.

Where it earns a slot is specific: helping iron absorb, and supporting glutathione recycling alongside NAC. 250 mg handles both.

When and how to take it

With or without food, morning or midday. Split the dose if higher amounts upset your stomach; diarrhea is the classic sign of too much.

Take it with iron if iron is the reason you're taking it. Otherwise, timing is irrelevant.

Who should skip it

Kidney stones are a caution at high doses. Hemochromatosis is the important one: vitamin C increases iron absorption, so avoid high doses with iron if you have an iron overload disorder. No drug interactions are listed, and it's safe in pregnancy.

Safety Notes

  • Adult UL is 2,000 mg/day; excess commonly causes diarrhea/GI upset.
  • Use caution with: kidney stones (caution), hemochromatosis (avoid high-dose with iron).

Timing With Other Supplements

  • Iron (Elemental): Can enhance nonheme iron absorption (helpful in deficiency contexts).

Common questions

How much vitamin C should I take per day?

250 to 1,000 mg if you take it at all; the ceiling is 2,000 mg. Above adequacy, more mostly means GI upset.

Is 1,000 mg of vitamin C too much?

It's the top of the catalog range and under the 2,000 mg ceiling. Not dangerous for most people, but rarely useful, and splitting it reduces stomach upset.

Does vitamin C help you absorb iron?

Yes. It enhances nonheme iron absorption, which is why the two are paired deliberately in deficiency plans. Vitamin C and iron together has the timing.
