Bacopa Monnieri

Ayurvedic herb studied for memory and learning enhancement.

By Suplagen Team · Updated

What it is

Bacopa monnieri is a traditional Ayurvedic nootropic herb. Bacosides, its active compounds, are studied for effects on memory consolidation.

How it works

Bacosides modulate acetylcholine, serotonin, and dopamine; enhance dendritic branching and synaptic communication.

What the evidence says

Moderate evidence for memory improvement in healthy adults; most studies use 300 mg standardized to 55% bacosides.

How much to take

The catalog range is 300 to 600 mg daily, with 600 mg as the ceiling. Most trials used 300 mg standardized to 55% bacosides, so that's the number to look for on the label.

Start at 300 mg. The moderate evidence for memory came from that dose held for 8 to 12 weeks, not from higher amounts.

When and how to take it

With a fat-containing meal, because the bacosides are fat-soluble and absorb better that way. Morning is the usual slot.

Cycle it: 12 weeks on, 4 weeks off, and expect some GI upset in the first weeks. It's the slowest supplement in our memory guide, and also the best-studied.

Who should skip it

Off-limits in pregnancy, with cautions for breastfeeding and GI sensitivity. Interactions: anticholinergic drugs (moderate) and thyroid medications (mild). On either, ask your doctor before adding it.

Safety Notes

  • GI upset is common initially; fat-soluble bacosides absorb better with meals. Patience needed — effects take weeks.
  • Cycling: 12 weeks on, 4 weeks off. Benefits build gradually.
  • Not recommended during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.
  • Use caution with: pregnancy/breastfeeding (caution), GI sensitivity (caution).
  • anticholinergic drugs: May counteract anticholinergic effects.
  • thyroid medications: May influence thyroid hormone levels; monitor.

Common questions

What is the right bacopa monnieri dosage?

300 to 600 mg daily, standardized to 55% bacosides. 300 mg is where the memory trials sit; 600 mg is the ceiling.

How long does bacopa take to work?

8 to 12 weeks of daily use. Effects build gradually, which is why the catalog cycles it 12 weeks on and 4 off. Judging it at week 2 tells you nothing.

Bacopa or lion's mane?

On evidence, bacopa: moderate for memory versus lion's mane's emerging grade. The full comparison covers when each makes sense.
